Centuries-old churches can be found in all regions of Santa Catarina. The first church built in the state, which was built in 1745 using mortar that mixed shells and whale oil, is located in Governador Celso Ramos. The temples of different periods and styles follow the trajectory of the state’s colonization, revealing the influences of different European immigrants. Works done by Santa Catarina’s sacred artists also draw attention to the interior of the churches.

Gruta da Curva Fria
Visited by hundreds of followers throughout the year. The image of Our Lady is high up on a rock wall. It is situated at 5 km from the Center, in the direction of Chapecó, beside the SC-468.
Gruta Nossa Senhora de Lourdes
The place is adorned by a beautiful cascade which forms a natural cloak over the image of the saint. It receives many followers for worship and prayer. It is located in the community of Presidente Juscelino, at 10 km from the Center.

Catedral Diocesana Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres (Diocesan Cathedral of Our Lady of Joy)
Built with blocks of flagstone, it has a gothic style. It stands out for the murals designed by the German artist August Scheidgen, and the extremely heavy bells brought from Germany in 1920. Open Tuesday through Friday, 8am to 12pm and 2pm to 8pm; Saturdays and Sundays, 8am to 12pm and 5pm to 8pm.

Convento São José (São José Convent)
Opened in 1897 by its founder, German friar Rogério Neuhaus, a charismatic figure who is still revered by the city’s population. The group, made up of the convent, house and chapel, was restored in 2001 and is one of the Lages’s main architectural highlights.

Morro da Cruz (Cruz Hill)

Mesquita Islâmica (Islamic Mosque)

Gruta Nossa Senhora de Lourdes (Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto)
A natural grotto with a waterfall that is more than 10 m high. There is an image of Our Lady of Lourdes inside. In October, the Romaria da Penitência (Pilgrimage of Penitence) takes place at the grotto. Santa Terezinha, 10 km from the Center of town, toward the Morro da Igreja.

Furnas de Sombrio (Sombrio Caves)
Are made up of four grottos. The biggest one is filled with images of saints and welcomes faithful religious followers from all over the region. The entrance to the grotto has a beautiful view of the Lagoa do Sombrio. There is also a restaurant and an inn at the location.
