Fishing

Fishing in Santa Catarina is guaranteed fun, whether along the beaches, bays and shorelines of the coast, or the inland rivers. The options are many, both for amateur fishermen and for professionals. In the cold waters of the Santa Catarina Mountains, trout fishing is a major attraction, in rivers surrounded by spectacular mountains and valleys. In the canals and mangroves of Babitonga Bay, in the northern region of the state, the focus is on bass fishing. Throughout Santa Catarina’s 560 km of coastline, there are great spots for fishing, bait casting and ocean fishing, Itajaí being one of the main centers for professional fishing in Brazil. There are also good options for day and night fishing around the peninsula of Porto Belo. In this region, there is a catch registry, within the standards of sport fishing, of large goldfish, mackerel, bonitos, tuna, white marlin and even blue marlin. Along the coast, you can fish sea bass, grouper, mullet, pompano, sea bream, and many other species. Whereas blue fish, good fighting fish, are abundant throughout all the coasts and islands between Florianópolis and Piçarras, between June and November. A separate spectacle is artisanal mullet fishing, which takes place from May to July in Florianopolis and the surrounding region. Trawlers organized by the fishermen, bring tons of fish to the beach, under the watchful eye of locals and tourists. It is also worth checking out the “fish and pay” sites scattered throughout the state – places where fishing is done in lakes or ponds. So, let’s go fishing?

Beaches, coasts and high seas
Most of the beaches and coasts of the Island of Santa Catarina, where the Santa Catarina capital is situated, are used for amateur fishing. But Florianópolis is also an important reference point in complete sport fishing. Large sea bream, mackerel, skipjack, tuna fish, hake, white marlin and even the majestic blue marlin captured on the high seas.

Mullet fishing
Traditionally performed between May and June, when the mullet shoals arrive at the Santa Catarina coast. The craft fishing is done by small boats, using trawling nets. The fishermen’s return is commemorated by visitors and curious onlookers who help to pull the loaded nets. During this period there are restrictions for surfers, with flags, indicating the fishing areas.
