Sand boarding was created in Florianópolis in the 1980s as a variation of snowboarding. The feeling of going down a dune on a surfboard can be as exciting as sliding on snow. Depending on the height of the mountain of sand, one can reach a speed of 60 km/h. The Joaquina dunes, in the capital, are the most famous in the state. At some points, they reach up to 60 m high. In Garopaba, there are dunes that are 30 meters high, on Siriú Beach (Praia do Siriú) and, in Jaguaruna, the Camacho and Arroio Corrente resorts have dunes up to 60 m high. The Morro dos Conventos, in Araranguá, also has good dunes for the sport. You can rent boards at these locations.
