Canoinhas

The Contestado War had one of its biggest settings in Canoinhas. The Museu Histórico Orty Machado (Orty Machado History Museum) has a good collection about the conflict and deserves to be visited. Another museum that stands out is the Erva-Mate (Yerba Mate) museum, whose cultivation stimulated the town’s economic development and started the main event of Canoinhas: the Festa da Erva-Mate (Yerba Mate Festival). You must also visit, when in the region, one of Brazil’s oldest artisan breweries.
