Ibirama

Land of plenty. This is what Ibirama means in the native dialect. The name is rather appropriate due to the natural riches of the municipality, which has countless rivers, waterfalls, natural swimming pools, grottoes and mountains. More than 30 thousand people a year enjoy all these beauties, practicing sports as trekking, rafting, rappel and cascading. Other attractions are the old country houses, the mills with waterwheels and the buildings of colonial architecture, rge heritage of the German colonization. Before the colonizers, however, the region was inhabited by Indians. Today, they can be found in the Terra Indígena Ibirama-La Klãnõ (Ibirama-La Klãnõ Indigenous Land), protection area which occupies part of the territory of the town and of another three municipalities.
