Joaçaba

Colonized by Italians and Germans, Joaçaba is an important industrial and commercial center of the Midwest region of Santa Catarina. The Teatro Alfredo Sigwalt (Alfredo Sigwalt Theater), in the shape of a piano, is one of its attractions. Religious tourism also stands out, with the monument of Frei Bruno and the beautiful Catedral Santa Terezinha (Santa Terezinha Cathedral). Alfredo Sigwalt Theater
A building shaped like a piano, it was inaugurated in 2003. Rehearsals of the Banda Carlos Gomes, the Fratelli d’Itália Choir and the Joaçaba Dance Festival presentations (November) are held at the theater.

See the statue of Frei Bruno, a religious figure who is currently in the process of being beatified by the Vatican. You should also visit the museum in his honor and the Catedral Santa Terezinha.

Statue of Frei Bruno
With a height of 37 m, it is located on the Morro Panorâmico (Panoramic Hill), a site with a beautiful view of Joaçaba and the neighboring Herval d’Oeste. Around the monument there is a restaurant and, soon there will also be the Museu Frei Bruno (Frei Bruno Museum) (temporarily installed next to the Catedral Santa Terezinha).

Catanduvas


Catanduvas’s biggest event is the Festa do Chimarrão (Chimarrão Festival), which puts the city’s main product in the spotlight: yerba mate. The town preserves the forager traditions, with folkloric dance groups and the Rodeio Crioulo (Crioulo Rodeo) (December). Other important events include the Italian Dinner, the patron saint São Sebastião festival (January) and the Semana do Município (Town’s Week) (March). Its main natural attractions are the Cachoeira da Linha Passo Grande (Linha Passo Grande Waterfall) and the Pocinho de São João Maria (São João Maria Well), located in the Águas Claras community.

Erval Velho


Erval Velho’s main attractions are the Igreja Matriz São Sebastião (São Sebastião Parish Church), the Gruta Nossa Senhora de Lourdes (Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto) and the patron saint São Sebastião festival. Among the other options for recreation and fun, highlights include the Salto do Rio Leão lake, the Pesque-Pague Recanto das Águas (Recanto das Águas “Fish and Pay”), the Parque Aquático Águas do Erval (Águas do Erval Water Park) and the rodeos put on by the CTGs (Centros de Tradições Gaúchas) (Gaúcha Traditions Center).

Herval d’Oeste


Located just 2 km from Joaçaba, Herval d’Oeste has the largest rock grotto in Santa Catarina: the Gruta de Sede Belém (Sede Belém Grotto), with 500 m2. Another attraction is the panoramic view that can be seen from the top of the Morro das Antenas (Antenas Hill) (1,210 m), 22 km from the Center. On the rural properties it is possible to go horseback riding and enjoy the tranquility of the field.

Lacerdópolis


Lacerdópolis’s tourist attractions begin at the entrance to the city, where the Pesque-Pague Pilatti (Pilatti “Fish and Pay”) is located. Another highlight is the jeep and go-kart race, which can be rented at the Sítio dos Lagos (Lagos Farm) track, where the competitions take place. When visiting the city, be sure to watch the Fanfarra Municipal (Town Fanfarra), see the Igreja Matriz São Francisco das Chagas (São Francisco das Chagas Parish Church) and take home colonial products from the region. The Expo Lacerdópolis (Lacerdópolis Expo), which takes place every two years (November), is also a good time to visit the town.

Luzerna


The Museu Frei Miguel (Frei Miguel Museum), in the Seminário São João Batista (São João Batista Seminary), is the main attraction in Luzerna. The site has more than 300 pieces collected by the religious figure, whose hobby was the study of natural sciences. The collection includes insects and large stuffed animals, bones, and formaldehyde-preserved snakes, wood and rocks. By appointment only.
