Nova Veneza

Nova Veneza is another important stronghold of Italian culture in the Encantos do Sul region. Its old stone houses are part of the National Immigration Routes, a project of the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN). Other highlights are the Immigrant Monument, located on top of the gate to the city, and an authentic Venetian gondola, which you can find in the main square. The Cônego Miguel Glacca Imigrant Museum, the São Marcos Parish Church, the religious and food festivals, and the Carnevale di Venezia are other attractions of Nova Veneza

History and Culture

Curiosities


Venetian gondola
Straight from its Italian sister city, the vessel is anchored in the lake at Praça Humberto Bortoluzzi. It is one of 4 specimens outside of Italy and it offers the visitor a chance to take photos and pose with the gondolier dressed in character.

Entry gate
On its top it has the Lion of São Marcos (symbol of the republic of Venice) and an iron cauldron (alluding to the polenta that sustained the efforts of the colonizers). The flags over the arches recall the pact of friendship betweenthe city and Veneto, in Italy.

Chaminé
Monument over 20 m high, built in 1925 by the Bortoluzzi Firm. It stands out in the praça christened with its name, which is one of the places where the Italian Cuisine Festival and the Carnevale di Venezia are held.

The building preserves beautiful sacred paintings and sculptures inside. The clock of the tower (originating from Venice) can be seen up close by climbing the 70 steps up into the bell tower, from where a beautiful view of the city can be seen.

Cônego Miguel Giacca Immigrant Museum
The building what was one the seat of the City Government and other public organizations, now holds furniture, tools, and utensils of the colonizing pioneers of the region. Tuesday to Friday, 8AM to 12PM and 1PM to 5PM; Saturday, Sunday and holidays, 9:30AM to 12PM and 1:30PM to 4PM.

Historical Italian Heritage


Stone houses
architectural group listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institutet (IPHAN). It includes three stone houses build by Italian immigrants in 1891. Located 2.6 km from the Center, on Via do Imigrante (old rural road which connects Nova Veneza to the District of Caravaggio). The path can covered by car (10 minutes) or on foot, passing through rural landscapes and native forests (50 minutes). Schedule a visit with the Tourist Information Center.

Carnevale di Venezia/ Italian Cuisine Festival
The event lasts for 3 days, and the programming includes local and regional shows, folklore and dance groups, parades, and typical foods. But the most awaited moment is really the Carnevale di Venezia, with party-goers masked in the style of Venetian Italy. In the second half of July.

Siderópolis


Coal city colonized by Italian immigrants. The main attractions of Siderópolis are the lake of the São Bento River Dam (20 km from the Center), Bianchini and Rio Fiorita waterfalls, the Nossa Senhora de Lourdes Grotto, and the resorts of the Fontanella, Valdir Napoleão, and Porton rivers. Another highlight is the charming Ghellere pousada, which offers ecological tours, a water part, and restaurant service typical cuisine, such as the traditional stewed chicken with polenta and colonial coffee.
