Pomerode

The cultural heritage of the immigrants coming from Pomerania, a historical region which occupied the north of Germany and Poland, is striking in this municipality of the Vale Europeu. There are more than 300 houses in timber frame style, which made the Town Hall claim the title of municipality, outside Germany, with the largest number of constructions of this type. Pomerode also has the largest quantity of real estate listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) among the towns which are part of National Immigration Routes. The Núcleo Rural de Texto Alto (Rural Center of Texto Alto) was listed by Unesco under the designation Cultural Scenery – place where the relation between human culture and the natural environment grant a singular identity. The legacy of the colonizers is also present in the gastronomy, highlighting the eisbein (pig’s knee), kassler (pork steak), stuffed wild duck as well as the breads, cakes, biscuits and pies. All this and much more can be enjoyed in established routes, as the Rota do Enxaimel (Timber Frame Route) and the Art and Charm Route.
