Praia Grande

Colonized by Azorean, Portuguese and Italian descendants, Praia Grande is an excellent destination for ecotourism. The town is situated in the lowlands of the canyons protected by the Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral national parks. The landscape is breathtaking, with waterfalls, natural pools, rocky rivers and huge cliffs that reach as high as 1,000m. The region has a good touristic structure, with hotels, inns and ecotourism operators. For the majority of the tours, the company of an accredited guide is mandatory. In addition to activities such as trekking, canyoneering, rappelling, boiacross (tubing), horseback riding, cycling and off-roading, there are stores full of handicrafts and events that celebrate the traditions of the colonizers and the gaúcha culture.

Festival de Boia-Cross (Tubing Festival)
During the event, the rapids of the Mampituba River are the setting for various types of boiacross (a sport recognized by the Brazilian Canoe Association) competitions. The traditional event is enlivened by shows from regional and national bands. In March, on the Mampituba River, near the Center of the city.

Parque Nacional Aparados da Serra (Aparados da Serra National Park)
The park’s impressive views are characterized by vertical rock walls that reach as high as 700 m, which are abruptly interrupted by the gentle slope of the plateau. Waterfalls and cascades make the setting even more breath taking. The conservation unit is situated at the border between Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, and has three trails that are open to the public. Starting at the headquarters of the National Park (in Cambará do Sul – RS), the main attractions include the Vértice (Summit) and Cotovelo (Elbow) trails along the upper edges of the canyon. The Trilha do Rio do Boi (Boi River Trail) – which follows a more challenging path through the interior of the canyon – can be accessed through the Posto de Informações e Controle de Praia Grande (Praia Grande Office for Information and Control). Cânion do Itaimbezinho (Itaimbezinho Canyon) – Trilha do Rio do Boi (Boi River Trail)

Approximately 9 km for trekking (round trip), passing through one of the most famous canyons of Aparados da Serra. The path crosses the Rio do Boi riverbed about 30 times and has various cascades and natural pools. The company of an accredited guide is mandatory. Parque Nacional da Serra Geral (Serra Geral National Park)
Trekking  through the parks various trails reveals waterfalls, rivers and other ecological recesses. The Park lies on the border between Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, and borders the Parque Nacional Aparados da Serra, with which it shares administration

Poço do Malacara
Trekking  through the depths of the Cânion Malacara (Malacara Canyon), between impressive basaltic walls, passing through rock beds and natural pools. With a duration of 3 hours, the practice requires the company of a guide. It is 6 km from the Center of the town.

Obs.: Inns and local tourism operators have professionals who are registered with the Associação Praia-Grandense de Condutores para o Ecoturismo (APCE) (Praia Grande Association of Ecotourism Guides) and offer tours that include, in addition to trekking, activities such as rappelling, boiacross (tubing) and horseback riding. Within the national parks, only trekking on authorized trails is permitted.

São João do Sul


Located between Praia Grande and the Lagoa do Sombrio (Sombrio Lake), São João do Sul stands out for the natural beauty of its rivers, lakes and waterfalls. The town is also home to the only hydrothermal saltwater source in the country, whose therapeutic waters (38º C) are indicated for treating various health problems. In the community of Barrinha, there are boat trips on the Lagoa do Sombrio. Handicrafts also grab your attention, with fabric and canvas paintings, loom rugs, crochet, knitting, embroidery, porcelain and recycled newspaper works, and ceramic pieces. A good option is visiting the city when events are being held, such as the Rodeio Crioulo (Crioulo Rodeo) (March), and the São João Batista (June), Settler (July, every other year) or Strawberry (September) festivals.
