São Francisco do Sul

São Francisco do Sul is one of the touristic destinations most visited in Santa Catarina. The town breathes history in its urban and architectural unit, with more than 400 items of real estate listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN). The occupation of the island where the town is situated started in 1504 with the coming of the French navigator Binot Paulmier de Gonneville. The Portuguese only appeared in the following century, colonizing the region and founding the first settlement of Santa Catarina: Nossa Senhora da Graça de São Francisco do Sul (1658). The municipality still preserves the peaceful air of former times, in spite of having one of the most important and busiest ports in the country. Besides the Historical Center, other attractions are worthy of one’s attention, as the beaches, waterfalls, mangrove swamps, dunes, sandbanks, lagoons and Atlantic Rainforests.
