Urupema

A great deal of fun awaits you in this small town in the Serra Catarinense, with its 2,400 inhabitants). Rural tourism is the big attraction and an opportunity to experience authentic country life and local culture. The farm hotels and inns offer various outdoor activities, such as horseback riding and fishing (trout is abundant in the region). The waterfalls and cascades also attract tourists, especially in the winter, when their waters reach the point of freezing on the coldest days.

Morro das Torres/Cascata que Congela (Torres Hill/Freezing Cascade)
With 1,750 m of altitude, the Morro das Torres offers an incredible view of the entire region. The Cascata que Congela is 1.5 km from the top and is worth seeing even on the hottest of days. The two spots are around 7 km from the Center of Urupema.

Taipas
Walls made out of basalt rock, which are around 1 m high (some built in the XVIII century), built to divide farms and other rural properties, to create boundaries for the cattle, or simply to indicated the path for the drovers. The “taipas” are a century-old tradition and can be seen at the entrance to and various points throughout the town and the Serra Catarinense.

Rural Tourism

Relax and enjoy yourself at Urupema’s farm hotels and inns. Take part in horseback rides and hikes, trout fish in reservoirs, go down rivers in rafts or see how cattle are managed. The typical cuisine, such as the traditional carreteiro (type of rice) and feijão tropeiro (drover’s beans), prepared on a wood stove, is another attraction of the hotels and inns.

Fazenda do Barreiro (Barreiro Farm)
One of the oldest farm hotels in Brazil, it has a private museum with objects that portray country life all the way back to the XVIII century.

Fishing


Pesca esportiva da truta (Trout sport fishing)
In the main rivers of the Serra Catarinense (Canoas, Pelotas, do Bispo, do Tigre and Lava-Tudo), sport fishing for trout, a fish originally from North America, is practiced. The “catch and release” season goes from August 1st to May 30th.
