Religious Tourism

In Santa Catarina, faith also motivates tourism. Nova Trento, the city of Madre Paulina (the first Brazilian saint), is the second most visited religious destination in the country. In Brusque, in the Valley of Miracles (Vale dos Milagres), the Azambuja Sanctuary holds Brazil’s largest collection of popular religious art. Statewide, there are 22 sanctuaries and one hundred destinations for religious pilgrimage. The attractions range from century old churches to Catholic grottos, mosques and temples of different religions, as well as festivals, pilgrimages, processions and celebrations of faith that inspire Santa Catarina’s faithful followers, as well as those from all over Brazil and throughout world.

Monk João Maria Grotto
Dedicated to the monk that, according to the region’s history, led the peasants in the Contestado War. It is located in front of the Lago das Araucárias (Araucaria Tree Lake), which supplied the first houses and sawmills of the area.

See the statue of Frei Bruno, a religious figure who is currently in the process of being beatified by the Vatican. You should also visit the museum in his honor and the Catedral Santa Terezinha.

With a height of 37 m, it is located on the Morro Panorâmico (Panoramic Hill), a site with a beautiful view of Joaçaba and the neighboring Herval d’Oeste. Frei Bruno Pilgrimage
Brings together around 50 thousand followers on the last Sunday of February. The pilgrimage goes from the cathedral to the tomb of the religious figure, in the city’s cemetery.

Furnas de Sombrio (Sombrio Caves)
Are made up of four grottos. The biggest one is filled with images of saints and welcomes faithful religious followers from all over the region. The entrance to the grotto has a beautiful view of the Lagoa do Sombrio. There is also a restaurant and an inn at the location.

Balneário Gaivota

Festa de São Sebastião (São Sebastião Festival)
Balneário Gaivota’s biggest traditional celebration of faith. It takes place in January at the Figueirinha neighborhood church, 6 km from the town’s Center.

Convento São José (São José Convent)
Opened in 1897 by its founder, German friar Rogério Neuhaus, a charismatic figure who is still revered by the city’s population. The group, made up of the convent, house and chapel, was restored in 2001 and is one of the Lages’s main architectural highlights.

The origin of the name is connected to the fact that it was built on the site where the drovers used to gather near the “watering hole” – source of potable water that supplied the city at the time of its founding.

Morro da Cruz (Cruz Hill)

Mesquita Islâmica (Islamic Mosque)

Santa Albertina Grotto
Holds the tomb of the Blessed Albertina Berkenbrock (1919-1931), beatified by the Vatican in 2007. The location receives pilgrimages throughout the year, attracting mainly young people.

Procession of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes
The image of the saint is carried from Vigia Beach to Vermelha Beach (Imbituba) on a vessel which has its course followed along the beach by hundreds of believers and visitors. In the first week of February.

The religious festival is one of the Azorean traditions preserved by Jaguaruna residents. In June, in the square at the Nossa Senhora das Dores Parish Church, Centro.


São Miguel
Neighborhood located in a mountainous region, above the valley, full of places suited for the practice of eco-tourism. The properties located in the region also offer various attractions for rural tourism. The path, followed by hundreds of the faithful, begins in front of the São Marcos Church, in the urban area, and continues into the rural zone for 2 km, passing by 14 capitels. On the way, it is possible to have a beautiful view of the Serra Geral. In other religious celebrations throughout the year, the stations of the Cross also attracts visitors.

Gruta Nossa Senhora de Lourdes
The place is adorned by a beautiful cascade which forms a natural cloak over the image of the saint. It receives many followers for worship and prayer. It is located in the community of Presidente Juscelino, at 10 km from the Center.

Discover the religious pilgrimages in the town, which was named in honor of Our Lady of Navigators.

Our Lady of Navigators Sanctuary
Includes the centenary church and a construction in the form of a ship that houses a grotto with an image of the patron saint. The location is also home to the Municipal Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport; the Municipal Band Music School and the Theater Group.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Grotto
There is an altar with the image of the saint and pure water spring.

Our Lady of Navigators Festival
In addition to the river procession, the program also includes novenas and masses, artistic shows, music shows, a trade fair, gastronomy and procession conducting the image of Our Lady of Navigators through the center of town. The festival lasts 10 days, between the last week in January and first week in February.

Nova Trento

Visit the most important Catholic sanctuary in Santa Catarina and other places which pay homage to the first Brazilian saint: Saint Pauline.

Santuário Santa Paulina
The complex preserves relics which were part of the life of Saint Pauline and the of the history of the foundation of the town, as the old family mill, the colonial museum and a replica of the cottage where the young Sister Pauline took care of the sick. More than 40 thousand people visit the sanctuary every month, especially on commemorative and religious dates as the as Liturgical Feast of Saint Pauline, Corpus Christi, All Souls’ Day, Easter and Christmas. Bondinhos Aéreos Parque Colina (Hill Park Cable Cars)
A bronze statue of Saint Pauline, candle holder, paintings of the story of Saint Pauline, a chapel for praying, a café and a store. There are ecological trails and viewpoints in the place.

Horse Riding on the Paths of Mother Pauline

On the eve of Holy Friday, the followers go up the Morro da Cruz, passing by the 14 phases which represent the Way of the Cross. On Hallelujah Saturday and Easter Sunday processions take place in the Center and at the Santuário Santa Paulina.
